“Success through Working with Integrity and Motivation!”

From the Principal’s Desk

Dear Jennie Dean Families,

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we navigated the impact of January’s winter storm. We were delighted to welcome students back to school last week and are grateful to continue our important work of teaching and learning together.

Our teachers and staff remain deeply committed to fostering student achievement in a positive, supportive environment, and we look forward to a productive month ahead.

I would also like to recognize some of our outstanding students. Congratulations to our school spelling bee participants and winners, as well as our 4th grade choir members who recently represented Jennie Dean at the All-City Choir event. These students performed exceptionally well and represented our school and community with pride and excellence.

Finally, thank you to our parents, families, and community for your continued partnership and support. Our students’ success would not be possible without you.

Sincerely,
Ed Stephenson
Principal

Letter from our Librarian

Please make sure that your student returns his or her library books in order to check out new books. If books are damaged, they need to come back to the library. If a book is lost, please email: KDavis@mcpsva.org or MWoo@mcpsva.org

As of February 9, 2026, our library has over 640 overdue books. Please remind your child to return their library book each week. Students have been taught that they are responsible for bringing back their books on time in order to check out new ones.

If your child has lost or damaged a library book, please notify their homeroom teacher and the librarian as soon as possible. Depending on the situation, a replacement fee may be required for lost or damaged materials.

Thank you for your support in helping us maintain our library collection!

Encore Update

Heart Health Month

Cardiovascular Endurance (Cardio Exercise):  An exercise that makes our heart and lungs work hard and grow stronger. I know I am doing cardio exercises when they make me feel short of breath and my heart pound fast.

Examples: jogging, jump roping, swimming,
biking, dancing, jumping jacks, high knees

Pulse Rate
When we do cardio exercise we can check
how fast our heart is pounding by checking
out pulse rate.  We can check out pulse at on our neck at our carotid artery or on our wrist at our radial artery.

Intensity levels
Understanding how hard out body is working based on our pulse rate

Jump Rope
We will practice jump roping skills and
increase our cardiorespiratory endurance

Grade Level News

Pre-K

The PreK3 and Prek4 classes will wrap up their clothes study this month and begin a new study: Exercise. We will explore different types of exercise and how to stay safe while exercising. The 2-year-old class will move on to exploring Paper – how do we use paper, change paper, and what can we do with paper. We will also explore feelings and emotions, friends, family, and weather this month.

Please remember, when MCPS has a two-hour-delay, there is no school for PreK. If there is no school, here are some fun activities you can do together as a family:

Build a blanket/pillow fort

Bring a bowl of snow inside to play with

Make a meal together

Read a book (maybe inside the blanket fort!)

Color or draw together

Have a scavenger hunt: find things that are all one color, or other attributes like big, small, shiny, fluffy, rough, etc.

Counselor’s Corner

February is full of excitement at our school! We will be honoring Black History Month and learning about our presidents. Plus, it’s National School Counseling Week, a special time to highlight how school counselors support students in reaching their goals and thriving every day! We have also made it easier for everyone to connect with us by sharing a clear referral process  for staff and parents.

Also, do not forget to save the date: Career Day is coming on March 25! It is going to be an amazing opportunity for students to explore different careers and dream big about their future. We are inviting parents in various careers to share the uplifting work you do in our community. Click here to register for Career Day!

Tip: Start the conversation about careers at home by asking your child what they enjoy doing most and what they are curious about. Connect those interests to real-world jobs. This helps them see how their passions can become possibilities!
