Dear Dolphin Families,

March is always a rewarding time of year. Classrooms are buzzing with learning activity, and you can feel the momentum carrying us into a strong spring season. I continue to be proud of the effort, kindness, and resilience our Dolphins show each day.

As always, thank you for your partnership. Your steady support makes a meaningful difference, and we are grateful for the trust you place in us. I’m looking forward to a joyful and productive March with our students.

News From PTO

PTO will be having a meeting on March 9th at 5:30pm in the JDES Cafeteria!

Get ready for some Chuck E Cheese fun!! March 25 from 3pm-9pm come hang out with your friends and have some fun while supporting your JDES PTO!! They are donating 50% back to our program!! 

And our last hoorah with Popcorn is March 27, 2026!!

Letter from the Librarian

Grade Level News

Prekindergarten

For the month of March the Prek 3 and 4 classes will conclude their Exercise study, and begin the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle study. Students will explore early academic concepts such as sorting, matching, and literacy through the themes of recycling. They will also study social concepts such as reusing and reducing waste. The 2-year-old class will begin the Containers study. They will learn how containers are used, how they are the same and different, and what containers can hold. As we approach unpredictable spring weather please make sure you child has a jacket and appropriate footwear – teachers try to go outside every day!

Kindergarten

For the month of March in language arts we will be working on writing and learning the sounds of the letters: D, W, L, and J. We will also be learning the high frequency words: are, have, said, two.
In math we will continue to read, write, and represent numbers 1-30 as well as learning different ways to make 10.

In science we will be learning about maps and globes!

Please review our letters and numbers as well as practice writing and counting daily at home!

First Grade

Math  This month, we will be focusing on:
Time to the half hour, addition Make 10, equality, and fractions.

Science and Social Studies  We will focus on  Economics and learning about the Earth and the sun.

Benchmark/ ELA This month, we are starting Unit 6 – Stories Teach Many. Students will continue to learn about the final e and the long a vowel teams. They will also learn about conjunction. Students will continue to practice writing.

Reminders 

First Grade field trip will be this month. A permission slip will be sent home for you to sign and returned.

Please remember to have your child read every night for 20 minutes and to practice writing at least a sentence about what he/she has done at school.

Support your child in completing other tasks too.

 

Second Grade

Math This month, we are working on subtraction and graphing data.

Science and Social  Studies This month, we are starting Life Cycles and finishing up our Historical Americans unit.

Benchmark/ ELA This month, we are working through our folk tales and fairy tales unit.  We are focusing on phonics, main idea, and details.

Reminders On Thursday, March 14, we will be going on a field trip to Huntley Meadows in Alexandia.  More information to come.

 

Third Grade

Math The students will be focusing on subtraction  We are introducing the standard algorithm, comparing fractions, and learning about polygons.

Science and Social Studies We will start our unit on force, motion and energy.  In social Studies we will start our unit on ancient Egypt and China.

Benchmark/ ELA In reading we will start Unit 7 Communities Then and Now focusing on communities and how they have changed over the years and writing a research paper.  Our  phonics focus will be on /er/ and /or/.

Reminders Please remember to have your child read every night for 30 minutes and record their time on their reading logs.  Also, each Monday a math worksheet is sent home for their weekly homework.  This is due on Friday.

Math   Compare and order Fractions

Benchmark/ ELA  We are working on Word Recognition, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Writing Skills.

Virginia Studies and Science We are starting our America and the New Nation and The Civil War units.  In science, we are learning about how weather affects ecosystems.

Reminders Please make sure your child is reading for at least 15 minutes each night. It can be a book of choice or a library book.  Study your” Multiples Chart” for a few minutes each night. Charts are in the back of the green daily folder.

Our students attend music, library, art, and physical education on a rotating schedule.  The schedule is noted as days A through E, and are available here.  Encore schedules adjust with days when school is unexpectedly closed, such as snow days.  The updated schedule is available here.  Contact your student's teacher for more information.
