A Message from Dr. Frischkorn

Good Evening, Mayfield Community

I hope everyone has had a successful start to the second quarter of the school year. Our staff and students continue to work hard to create a learning environment where everyone can flourish. We must continue working as a collective community to ensure that our Bobcat best is shown daily. I know that November and December can be tricky with all the days off and the excitement of the winter season ahead of us.

I want to inform the community that starting November 18, 2024, I will be out of the building for an extended time. I'm scheduled for surgery next week, and the recovery time will probably take up until the winter break. For those that are new to our community, I was diagnosed with colon cancer in February. For the past 8 months, I have received immunotherapy treatments, and the results have been positive. Next week's surgery will hopefully get me back to 100% health as we move into the new year.

Although it is never ideal to miss an extended time, I can assure you that Mayfield is in good hands because of our excellent staff. Our assistant principals, Mrs. Milhoan (6th Grade) and Mr. Moore (5th Grade), will continue to be here and support our students, families, and staff. We will also have a substitute administrator join our team while I'm out of the building. Amy Jordan will be here through the remainder of November and all of December, assisting in the day-to-day routines and ensuring that our students continue to thrive in this wonderful learning environment that we have created.

Here is the list of important contacts while I'm out:

Sarah Milhoan, 6th Grade Assistant Principal

  • SMilhoan@mcpsva.org

Brian Moore, 5th Grade Assistant Principal

  • BMoore@mcspva.org

Amy Jordan, Substitute Principal

  • AJordan@mcpsva.org

Congratulations to our Teacher of the Year Nominees

I am excited to share that we have submitted our nominees for the Washington Post Teacher of the Year and the Virginia Teacher of the Year for Mayfield Intermediate School. Both educators are extremely deserving due to the multitude of things that they bring to Mayfield, ranging from their commitment to always be willing to learn, their high expectations for students, and their outstanding relationships with their colleagues that help make our school an incredible place to learn for both adults and students alike. I am proud that I have had the opportunity to work with these two individuals in multiple school divisions, and their commitment and dedication to serving the community were the same. They are great educators and even better people! Please help us congratulate our two Teachers of the Year nominees!

Happy School Psychologist Week!

During the week of November 11-15th, the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and schools across the United States have celebrated National School Psychology Week. This week celebrates the contributions of school psychologists and the important role they play in schools and communities. NSPW is an annual opportunity to recognize school psychologists' work to help children thrive in school, at home, and in life. This year’s theme, “Spark Discovery,” recognizes the work that school psychologists do to help their communities seek out new ideas, effect change, and expand horizons for children and youth. Thank you to our MCPS School Psychologists for your valuable contributions to our community!

After School Tutoring Begins this Week

Mayfield Intermediate School is beginning its after-school tutoring program. It operates Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:20 PM to 4:20 PM. The school division provides transportation home for students using the activity buses. Students are invited to attend the tutoring sessions based on their individual needs. Students will receive a letter stating they have been invited to attend one of the tutoring sessions.

On Tuesdays, students will participate in reading support using the Lexia program. Virginia is investing significantly in high-dosage academic tutoring and the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA). Lexia's curriculum and professional learning solutions are designed to equitably meet the needs of all Virginia students and the educators who support them. Our literacy programs provide evidence-based, systematic, personalized learning on critical reading and language skills to accelerate development and provide data-driven plans to differentiate instruction for each student. Students will be provided a Lexia account (they can also access it at home). Teachers will work with students in small groups and provide the support and intervention that students need while utilizing Lexia. Several students already have a Lexia account and are currently using Lexia during their Bobcat Block intervention time.

Thursday's after-school tutoring will focus on supporting students who have missed a significant amount of time and are at risk for chronic absence for the school year. Students who have missed four or more school days during the first quarter of the school year have been invited to attend. They will be provided academic support in reading and math while also setting personal goals to improve their attendance for the school year. We call our Thursday tutoring session Making-Up Mayfield Moments.

Upcoming Survey for Students and Staff

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Our school, in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Education, is conducting the Virginia School Survey of Climate and Working Conditions. We will survey students in grade 6 as well as classroom instructors and staff, beginning in January 2025. The purpose of the student survey is to measure student support, student engagement, school discipline, and safety conditions in each school. This information will be used to guide educational practices that produce a safe and supportive school environment.

The student survey will be completed between January 13-January 18. The survey does not ask for your child’s name and all answers are anonymous. No one, including teachers and administrators, will know how your child answered the survey questions. You will not have access to your child’s survey answers. You may preview the questions asked in the student survey at this website: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurvey.

The survey will ask questions such as how students feel about their school, how students get along with one another and their teachers, how students feel about school rules, and their perceptions of their teachers’ willingness to help them. Please note that there are questions about topics that may be sensitive to some, including questions about bullying, mental health, and suicide. This is a great time to talk to your child about these important issues. For guidance and more resources on these topics, please see https://tinyurl.com/MentalHealthdcjs or  https://tinyurl.com/VDOEstudentservices.

All students in your child’s grade level are eligible to participate in the survey. The survey is voluntary and you and/or your child can decide they prefer not to participate. No action will be taken against you, your child, or the school if your child does not participate. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please notify the school office by telephone, email or letter by January 5.

The Virginia School Survey results are provided to the school around the end of the school year.  You can find survey results for your school and division here: https://tinyurl.com/VaSchoolSurvey. The results are used by the school, the division, and the state to identify strengths and to address relevant needs to improve learning environments for your child as well as students across the state.

Thank you for your cooperation in this important study of Virginia’s schools.

Mayfield is in the Manassas Christmas Parade

Mayfield Intermediate School is returning for another year of participating in the Annual Manassas Christmas Parade. Mayfield has a long history of participating in the annual tradition dating back to when our school opened in 2006. In recent years, with the support of Mrs. Dove and Mrs. Hopkins, our school's safety patrol has taken the lead role in creating our Mayfield float! This year, our school is looking to defend its title for the Best Float in the parade. Be sure to wave and cheer as Mayfield's float goes by if you are attending the parade on December 3.

Student Code of Conduct

The Student Code of Conduct helps all students and parents understand their school-related rights, responsibilities, and expectations of the school. It is not intended to be a comprehensive document covering all possible situations but to provide a framework that makes clear that students are expected to act responsibly and with respect for other human beings at all times.

Parents can download a copy of the Student Code of Conduct from our school division website.
