A Message from the Mayfield Administration Team

Dear Mayfield Community and Families,

Happy New Year, Mayfield Intermediate School community. I'm so excited to return for a happy and healthy 2025. I want to thank our incredible staff for their support during my extended leave from surgery. Amy Jordan did an outstanding job filling in as the substitute principal in my absence, and Mr. Moore and Mrs. Milhoan continued to provide the same high-quality support that we have grown accustomed to at Mayfield Intermediate School. On top of that, this just reiterates the outstanding staff we have in our school in all aspects. We have the best licensed and support staff around, and they ensure that Mayfield continues to thrive! Finally, I'm happy to report that I'm beginning 2025 cancer-free and full of energy. Again, I can't express enough how thankful I am to be the principal of Mayfield Intermediate School.

Thankful,

Donnie Frischkorn, Principal

Sarah Milhoan, 6th Grade Assistant Principal

Brian Moore, 5th Grade Assistant Principal

Grade 5 Unit of Study for Benchmark

Dear Family Member,

Welcome to our next unit of study, “Technology’s Impact on Society.”

As we begin our fifth unit in the Benchmark Advance program, we

are approaching the halfway mark! As with the previous units, I am

providing suggested activities you and your child can do together at

home to build on the work we’re doing in class.

The selections in this unit will get us thinking about the role that

technology has played in people’s lives. The focus will be on the

Industrial Revolution and how it changed the way people lived and

worked. The selections include a variety of genres, such as poetry,

informational texts, historical fiction, and biography.

This thought-provoking unit will allow you and your child to think

about how technology has impacted you, your family, and the society

you live in.

As always, should you have any questions about our reading

program or about your child’s progress, please don’t hesitate to

your child's reading teacher.

Grade 6

Family Life Education Classes at Mayfield

Dear Parent/Guardian:

In response to the Code of Virginia, instruction in Manassas City Public Schools includes a

comprehensive, sequential Family Life Education (FLE) program for Grade 4 through grade 10.

The FLE program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to make

informed, responsible decisions related to growth and development; communication and

relationships; and emotional and social health.

Although the FLE program is highly compatible with existing curricula and serves to enrich the

educational experiences of students, FLE content may be considered sensitive. Therefore,

parents/guardians may choose to opt their child out of all or any part of FLE instruction.

Students who are opted out will be provided with non-punitive health lesson during FLE

instruction.

Parents/guardians should review the FLE objectives pertaining to their child’s grade or course

before making opt out decisions. Detailed grade level and course-related objectives are located

on the MCPS webpage https://www.mcpsva.org .

If you determine your child should not be included in FLE this school year, indicate the

objectives on the form that accompanies this letter and return the form to your child’s PE

teacher prior to FLE instruction. Unless you indicate otherwise, your child will be included in

FLE. You do not need to return the form if you wish for your child to participate in FLE

instruction. Parents/guardians transferring students to schools within MCPS are responsible for

informing the new school of opt-out decisions.

While parents/guardians may opt their child out of formal FLE instruction, teachers cannot be

held responsible for spontaneous questions from students that may pertain to subjects

previously discussed. Neither can a teacher be held accountable for discussions of sensitive

topics that occur among students outside class. It is recognized that some families prefer that

FLE instruction be provided in the home or church, or by the family physician. Every effort will

be made to ensure that students understand and respect family choices in this matter to avoid

undue peer pressure.

For more information about the MCPS Family Life Education program, please contact your

child’s Health and Physical Education teacher. If you have questions about the timeline for FLE

instruction in your child’s school, please contact your child’s teacher or administrator.

Metz Middle School Cirriculum Night

Dear Rising 7th Grade Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to our future Metz Mustangs.  Please join us for our Curriculum Night on Thursday, January 23rd, from 6:00-7:30pm.  Curriculum Night is open to parents/guardians and students.  This program will provide information to help students select courses for the 2025-2026 school year.  During the month of February, students will be working with school counselors to select courses for next year.

There will be a presentation to give you an overview of the academic advising/course selection process.  In addition, teachers will be available during the “curriculum open house” for you to ask questions and learn more about specific courses and programs at Metz Middle School.  The various core and elective classes will be available to answer questions along with information about our English Language Learners, Special Education and IH/IMS programs.  The schedule for the Rising 7th Grade information is as follows:

·         6:00-6:30pm – Academic Advising Overview – Auditorium

·         6:30-7:30pm – Curriculum Open House – Commons A and Gym

The information available at Curriculum Night is a valuable way to guide conversations to support students to choose courses that are of interest to them and challenge them as we prepare them for High School while exploring their post-secondary interests.

The online course catalog and other information related to academic advising can be found on the Metz school counseling page on our school website under course registration at this link.  We look forward to seeing you at Metz for our Curriculum Night on Thursday, January 23rd, from 6:00-7:30pm.

Sincerely,

Harry Wolin
