The Mayfield Messenger

Week 22 Edition #8, January 31, 2025

A Message from the Mayfield Administration Team

Dear Mayfield Community and Families,

I hope our families enjoy the break from the cold weather (although there is too much rain today). I want to take a moment to thank our custodial staff for all they have done to ensure our school is ready for students in January. While many of us were at home during the snowstorm earlier this month, our custodial staff was here at Mayfield clearing the snow and working to ensure that the walkways were clear of ice and safe for students and staff. During the freezing mornings a couple of weeks ago, our custodians were outside early in the morning, icing the sidewalks before students and staff arrived. Because of our excellent custodians, we could attend school and safely walk into our building because of the clear parking lots and sidewalks.

Students and Families, enjoy your 3-day weekend, and we will see you all back here in Mayfield on Tuesday, February 4.

School Counseling Week

School Counseling Week

The week of February 3rd is a time that we recognize our school counselors at Mayfield Intermediate School. Ms. LaScola, Mr. Vavrinak, Mrs. Shaffer, and Ms. Lima-Bravo provide excellent services to our students. Their hard work ensures that our students are supported inside and outside the classroom and available to learn while they are here at Mayfield. Our school counselors do so much for our students, including one-on-one counseling sessions, daily check-ins with students, group lessons for homerooms, small group lessons focused on various supports that our students have requested, attendance support, scheduling, and teaching students about career connections.

TEST DATES: February 5 (Listening), February 13 (Reading), February 25 (Writing)

We have 302 students participating in the WIDA ACCESS assessment that starts Wednesday, February 5. Below, you can read some additional information regarding the ACCESS assessment

ACCESS for ELLs Online (ACCESS Online) is a computer-based, adaptive test that responds to student performance and may be administered in group or individual settings. This assessment is given annually to students in grades 1-12.

ACCESS Online meets U.S. federal requirements under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) for monitoring and reporting ELs’ progress toward English language proficiency. It tests students' language in the four domains: Listening, Reading, Speaking, Writing.

Features

  • The online test platform routes students to easier or more challenging content based on their performance.

  • The online format promotes increased student engagement.

  • Built-in accessibility and accommodation features support individual students' needs.

  • ACCESS Online can be administered to groups of students in various grades and at different proficiency levels at the same time.

  • Online testing ensures standardized, reliable scoring.

  • Domains are scored either automatically by the test platform or by the test vendor's trained raters.

The Student Code of Conduct helps all students and parents understand their school-related rights, responsibilities, and expectations of the school. It is not intended to be a comprehensive document covering all possible situations but to provide a framework that makes clear that students are expected to act responsibly and with respect for other human beings at all times.
