The Mayfield Messenger

Week 1 Edition, August 16th

A Message from Dr. Frischkorn

We have had an incredibly successful start to the 2024-2025 school year. The months of planning and preparation by our School Board, Central Office, administrators, teachers and instructional assistants, bus drivers, and custodians have paid off. We welcomed our 860 Bobcats back for what will be a remarkable year of academic, social, and emotional growth for our students.

The school and families must work together throughout the school year to ensure our students have the best learning experiences. Please don't hesitate to contact your child's teacher, school counselor, or administrator with any questions or concerns during the school year.

Building a Strong Foundation for a Successful School

Teachers work with their classes to build a strong community of learners. Throughout the school year, students in our classrooms will rely on their learning community to help them grow and learn. Our teachers have been well-trained at incorporating cooperative learning structures within their daily lessons, which helps increase student engagement for everyone in the classroom.

Additionally, teachers have been guiding their classes in constructing Social Contracts that help the students and teachers become high-performing teams of leaders and learners. The social contract is based on four key questions that everyone in the classroom reflects on and provides input.

  1. How do you want to be treated by the teacher/leader?

  2. How do you want to be treated by each other?

  3. How do you think the teacher/leader wants to be treated?

  4. How do we want to treat each other when there is conflict?

Metz Middle School Sports for 6th Grade Students

The 6th-grade students at Mayfield Intermediate School can participate in the Prince William County Middle School sports program as members of Metz Middle School.

Metz Middle School offers various sports programs during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. The fall sports season is scheduled to begin on Monday, August 26. The students can participate in a three-day tryout for the team. The fall sports offered at Metz Middle School include football, boys' soccer, volleyball, girls' track, and cheerleading.

Students must have an updated sports physical on file to participate in the middle school sports tryouts. They can pick up the sports physical form at the 6th-grade office and take it to their family's doctor.

Transportation to Metz Middle School is provided. Students need to inform their regular bus driver that they are trying out for a middle school sport, and their driver will drop them off at Metz after their afternoon Mayfield bus run. Activity buses are also provided to help transport students home after the tryouts have been completed for the day.

Student Code of Conduct Presentations During Lunches

The Student Code of Conduct helps all students and parents understand their school-related rights, responsibilities, and expectations of the school. It is not intended to be a comprehensive document covering all possible situations but to provide a framework that makes clear that students are expected to act responsibly and with respect for other human beings at all times.

Parents can download a copy of the Student Code of Conduct from our school division website.

Safety Drills

Mayfield Intermediate School will conduct several safety drills throughout the school year to ensure our students and staff know what to do in an emergency. On Thursday, we held our first fire drill for the school year. The fire drill serves as a time to review the quickest and safest exit route from the school building for the students. It also provides a time to emphasize the need for excellent behavior and listening skills. Our students did an outstanding job, and we will continue to speak with them and the staff about the need to be ready if an emergency occurs.

We are very fortunate to have Ms. Dove as our School Safety Officer and Officer Koncen as our School Resource Officer to ensure that our students and staff are safe and prepared to learn throughout the school day.

We will conduct our first lockdown, secure the building, and shelter-in-place drill on Wednesday, August 21st.

Here is a list of the safety drills we will conduct during the school year.

  • Fire Drills

  • Bus Evacuation Drills

  • Tornado Drills

  • Earthquake Drills

  • Lockdown, Secure the Building, and Shelter in Place Drills
