Mayfield Intermediate

The Mayfield Messenger

Week 3 Edition, August 29th

A Message from Dr. Frischkorn

Thank you to all the families, staff, and students for helping make the first three weeks of school so successful! Again, we have focused on building a solid foundation based on community building and respecting each other. Now that the foundation has been built, we can continue to provide top-tier instruction to ensure every child grows socially, emotionally, and academically.

If you haven't had a chance to meet us during Open House, we want to introduce you to our administrative team.

Principal: Dr. Donnie Frischkorn

I'm entering my 7th year as the proud principal of Mayfield Intermediate School. I'm most proud of our steady but continuous improvement in student achievement since we returned from the pandemic. Additionally, I believe that we have assembled one of the best staff in Northern Virginia. Our teachers and staff at Mayfield Intermediate School ensure that our students receive a quality education in a safe and caring learning environment.

5th Grade Assistant Principal: Mr. Brian Moore

Mr. Moore, our 5th Grade Assistant Principal, has been a key part of the Mayfield Intermediate School team for the past ten years. He plays a crucial role in helping our 5th-grade students transition to our school and ensuring they understand the Mayfield process. His oversight of our special education department and Section 504 plans, as well as his work with families during the child study process, are instrumental in preparing our students for success at our school.

6th Grade Assistant Principal: Mrs. Sarah Milhoan

Mrs. Milhoan, our 6th Grade Assistant Principal, brings four years of experience to the Mayfield Intermediate School team. She will be working closely with our 6th-grade students and teachers to ensure they are well-prepared for their transition to Metz Middle School at the end of the school year. In addition to supporting our 6th graders, Mrs. Milhoan will be overseeing our school-wide testing, including the WIDA ACCESS for our English Language Learners, the VAAP for our structured classrooms, and the VGA and SOL testing throughout the year.

Mayfield Student Tailgate

TICKETS ARE ON SALE NOW!

On Friday, September 6th, Mayfield will host our first student social of the school year. The Mayfield Tailgate allows our students to socialize and meet some of their fellow Mayfield classmates. The tailgate is held directly after school from 2:30 PM to 4:15 PM. Our fantastic transportation department provides after-school transportation.

Students MUST have a signed permission slip to purchase a ticket. Tickets are $5.00 and must be purchased in advance.

Students who purchase a ticket to attend will also get free access to the Osbourn High School football game later that night by showing their wristband to the ticket takers at the football game. The game starts at 7:00 PM.

VGA Testing

Our students participated in the Fall Virginia Growth Assessments for reading and math on Tuesday, August 27th, and Thursday, August 29th. The students did a tremendous job working hard to help us determine a baseline for where all our students are starting the school year. The students will participate in the VGA testing again in the winter and then take their SOL exam at the school year's conclusion. Together, all three assessments will show each student's progress throughout the academic year.

We want to highlight the work of Mrs. Milhoan, our 6th-grade assistant principal and school testing coordinator. She did an excellent job ensuring that our students had all the materials needed to complete the assessments. Thank you to all our staff for administering the VGAs. This was an entire team effort.

The Importance of Great School Attendance

As week #3 comes to a close, I would like to take a moment to reemphasize the importance of attending school every day prepared and ready to learn. The data is clear: Students with good attendance in 5th and 6th grade tend to have better grades, score higher on SOL exams, and succeed better as they transition through Metz Middle School and Osbourn High School. Establishing the habit of attending school will translate into adulthood and help our students throughout their lives. Our school is here to support families who need assistance with strategies and ideas for supporting their children in attending school every day.
