The Mayfield Messenger

Edition #4: October 10th, 2025

A Message from your School Administrators

Good Evening, Mayfield Community,

We had an exciting day hosting our first Student of the Month celebration of the school year!

We were honored to recognize 68 outstanding students selected by their teachers for August and September. Each of these students has demonstrated their "Bobcat Best" daily, helping us establish a strong, positive foundation for the entire school year.

We were thrilled to see such an excellent turnout from family members who joined us to celebrate their children's accomplishments. (And yes, the Friday morning Krispy Kreme donuts were a great addition!)

Thank you for your unwavering support. Your efforts in helping your children at home, instilling great character traits, and participating in our school celebrations are invaluable to our success.

Have a fantastic weekend

Dr. Frischkorn

6th Grade

On Wednesday, October 15th, our 6th-grade students have been invited to the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas, VA, to see the Manassas Ballet Theatre's performance of Frankenstein. Every year, our students get the opportunity to visit this world-class facility and see some talented performers who live right here in Manassas, VA.

Manassas Ballet Theatre (MBT) opens its season with the tale Frankenstein! Set to an original score by Kim Reynolds and performed by the Kim Reynolds Band, the ballet brings this legendary classic to life in a thrilling blend of drama, emotion, and artistry. Experience the story of Frankenstein through stunning new choreography and captivating live music that reimagine this frightful masterpiece as only MBT can.

Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA)

VGA TEST DATE for READING: October 28, 2025

VGA TEST DATE for MATH: October 30, 2025

Legislation passed in the 2021 Virginia General Assembly (HB2027 and SB1357) required the implementation of “through-year” or “growth” assessments for reading and mathematics in grades 3-8. To ensure that the growth assessments administered for this purpose are aligned to the Standards of Learning (SOL), the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) developed shorter computer adaptive tests (CAT) using existing SOL test items.

The legislation requires that the grades 3-8 reading and mathematics growth assessments be administered to students once in the fall and once in the winter (mid-year) during the school year. In addition to the growth assessments, the SOL tests for grade 3-8 reading and mathematics will continue to be administered.

In compliance with the 2021 legislation, the CAT algorithm has been configured so that the student might be administered some items from below or above the current grade level depending on the student’s responses to the on-grade-level content items. For example, students taking the grade 5 mathematics growth assessment will primarily be administered grade 5 test items; however, depending on the student’s responses to the on-grade-level test items, the student may also be administered some grade 4 test items or some grade 6 test items.

After School Tutoring

SUMMIT K-12 Literacy Program

We are excited to announce the launch of our extensive after-school tutoring program, designed to provide targeted academic support for our students.

We have invited over 300 students to participate in this valuable opportunity, which utilizes the Summit K-12 Connect to Literacy™ program.

About the Program

The Summit K-12 Connect to Literacy™ program is designed to revolutionize the way English is taught. It provides innovative, engaging, and hands-on practice and instruction, offering students the most advanced English language resources available.

Our Goal

The primary goal of our tutoring program is to provide dedicated support to our students who receive English Language (ESOL) services. The instruction will focus on preparing these students to demonstrate significant growth on the ACCESS assessment, which is administered each year in February and March.

Please keep an eye out for a separate, more detailed communication regarding your student's potential participation and the program schedule.

We look forward to a successful year of growth and achievement!

Making-up Mayfield Moments:

Academic and Attendance Support

This after-school tutoring program, Making-Up Mayfield Moments, is specifically designed to support students who have been identified as chronically absent (missing 10% or more of the school year).

The program's primary goal is to empower students to get back on track both academically and in their attendance.

Program Components:

  • Academic Catch-Up: Students will be given dedicated time and a supportive space to make up missing assignments and catch up on essential classwork. Our outstanding teachers will provide individualized support and clarification on concepts, helping students fill academic gaps created by absences.

  • Attendance and Goal Setting: Students will participate in focused sessions on goal setting and tracking their progress to develop strategies for improving their school attendance for the remainder of the year.

  • School Connection & Engagement: The program includes engaging group activities designed to strengthen the students' connection to the Mayfield community, foster a sense of belonging, and make school a more positive and engaging experience.

By addressing both academic deficiencies and the root causes of chronic absenteeism, Making-Up Mayfield Moments equips students with the tools and support needed for a successful second half of the school year.

After School Activity Bus Schedules

After School Buses depart Mayfield at 4:20 PM

As the school year progresses and we introduce additional after-school clubs/activities and tutoring, it is essential to remind families that the after-school activity buses follow slightly different routes than our regular morning and afternoon bus routes. Please review the three different activity bus routes. You can find the closest street intersection on the bus route to know where students will be dropped off if they are riding the after-school activity bus.
